The Star Wars film trilogies are known for the iconic "Death Star," an alien battle station that shoots out beams of directed energy powerful enough to blow up planets. The real universe makes much more extraordinary beams that can unleash in a few seconds as much energy as our sun will generate over its 10-billion-year lifetime. These beams blast out of imploding stars at over 99% the speed of light. They carry most of their energy in the form of gamma-rays—a lethal form of radiation that can penetrate bone and tear apart living cells. If our planet got caught in a nearby gamma-ray burst (GRB) the atmosphere would be largely stripped away. The current record for a super-powerful GRB goes to a January 2019 outburst. The eruption came from a galaxy located so far away that the explosion actually happened 5 billion years ago. When the diluted radiation finally arrived at Earth, it was seen by our satellite sentries that monitor the sky for such fireworks: NASA’s Swift and Fermi telescopes, in addition to the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes on the Canary islands. Hubble can't detect gamma-rays, but its sharp vision was used to see where the burst came from. The host galaxy of the GRB is actually one of a pair of colliding galaxies. NASA scientists have confirmed the presence of water vapor above the surface of Europa, shot into space in huge geysers from the moon's surface. This supports the supposition that a vast subterranean ocean (possibly double the size of Earth's oceans!) is hidden beneath its icy surface.

Now if NASA could just confirm a foolproof way to extract that water without flooding your cities when the heat gets turned up... Have you successfully terraformed this icy moon of Jupiter? 🚀.

Saturn is losing its rings! 👀
If you were to pick Saturn out of a lineup you'd probably recognize it by its iconic rings. They're the biggest, brightest rings in our solar system. Extending over 280,000 km from the planet; wide enough to fit 6 Earths in a row. But Saturn won't always look this way. Because its rings are disappearing.

That's right, Saturn is losing its rings! And fast. Much faster, even, than scientists had first thought. Right now, it's raining 10,000 kilograms of ring rain on Saturn per second. Fast enough to fill an Olympic-sized pool in half an hour.

¡AGUA EN EUROPA, la luna de júpiter!

Los científicos de la NASA acaban de confirmar que hay agua en Europa, la prometedora luna de Júpiter. El anuncio se hace luego de detectar el elemento en forma de vapor saliendo de la superficie, lo que refuerza la evidencia de un colosal océano debajo de la capa de hielo del satélite natural.

La misión llamada Europa Clipper, que se lanzará a mediados de la década de 2020 Cuando llegue a Europa, realizará un estudio detallado de la superficie, el interior profundo, la atmósfera delgada, el océano subsuperficial y los respiraderos activos aún más pequeños. Clipper intentará tomar imágenes de cualquier penacho y tomar muestras de las moléculas que encuentra en la atmósfera con sus espectrómetros de masas. Para entendermos esse experimento mental proposto pelo físico Erwin Schrödinger, precisamos saber o conceito de "Superposição quântica". Esse fenômeno diz, basicamente, que uma partícula, antes de ser medida/observada se encontra em todos os estados possíveis ao mesmo tempo. Isso mostra o quão bizarro é o mundo quântico. O gato de Schrödinger foi um experimento mental proposto pelo físico Erwin Schrödinger, e o intuito era explicar o conceito de superposição. Nesse experimento, um gato é colocado em uma caixa com um medidor radioativo, um materia radioativo, um frasco de veneno e um martelo. A caixa permanece fechada, caso o material radioativo decáia, o medidor irá captar e o martelo quebrará o frasco de veneno que matará o gato. O observador não sabe o que está acontecendo dentro da caixa, isso implica que aquilo tudo entrou em um estado de superposição, o gato na caixa adquiriu todos os estados possíveis, ele pode estar vivo ou morto dentro da caixa, mas para quem está fora o gato está vivo e morto. Ele só saberá o estado real do gato quando abrir a caixa. Isso nos diz muita coisa, inclusive nos deixa em uma certa crise de identidade, podemos assim dizer. De acordo com o experimento, ele só conhecerá o resultado se olhar, caso não olhe, o experimento não terá um estado definido. E se o universo inteiro for assim?
